On the occasion of his 100th birthday, this film pays tribute to John G. Morris, a leading figure in photojournalism and a privileged witness to its history. From Life magazine to Magnum, he notably oversaw the coverage of the D-Day landings and the selection of Robert Capa’s photographs.

11-MINUTE DOCUMENTARY

In 2016, we made a film about John G. Morris to mark his 100th birthday. The filming actually took place on the very day the results of the U.S. election were announced. John was one of the most respected photo editors, authors, and journalists. A leading figure in the history of photojournalism, he worked for Life Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Magnum Photos, and others. As photo editor for Life magazine in London, he oversaw the coverage of the D-Day landings in France on June 6, 1944—D-Day—and was responsible for selecting Robert Capa’s historic photographs.

Sadly, he passed away in 2017, and we wish to pay tribute to him through this film directed by Marketa Tomanova and produced by Troublemakers Originals. We would like to thank his family as well as the entire team that contributed to this project.

Marketa Tomanova is a director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, and editor. Her international career has led her to work on short films, music videos, commercials, and documentaries. Her feature-length documentary about the French photographer André Villers has been selected for numerous festivals around the world and won the Best Art Documentary award at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival.

James Hagger

James Hagger is a producer and the founder of Troublemakers. He views production as a space for dialogue between storytelling, craftsmanship, and artistic integrity. Trained in London in the late 1990s as an assistant director, he worked alongside Nick Love, Kevin Reynolds, Christian Volckman, and Harmony Korine—experiences that have shaped his vision.
