The Monnaie de Paris hit a series of coins in the effigy of Jean Paul Gaultier as a tribute to his extraordinary work and career. Hugo Ramirez was chosen to direct the two films and the communication campaign around this event. The technique of traditional animation was chosen to create a dreamlike world and tell the story of this couple who steals the coin mutually. They run after each other to retrieve it and travel through iconic urban landscapes of Paris and Marseille. We can see the Eiffel Tower, the Pont des Arts, the Mucem, Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Calanques, the Ferris wheel and the Place de la Concorde, the Louvre Pyramid, the Rivoli arches, the Moulin Rouge, etc ... All these monuments constitute the architectural and cultural heritage of the very identity of Jean Paul Gaultier. The films were entirely made in hand-to-hand animation on traditional animation software and large format graphics tablets. Hugo Ramirez first created a precise storyboard by movie. Leila Courtillon took charge of the layouts design work. Leila and Hugo worked closely together to create a strong identity through the choice of very limited colors and stylization. Hugo worked with Jean Paul Gaultier to feel his universe in the two films. Jean Paul was very attentive to the shape of the corset and the hair that is very important to him. Hugo chose Olivier Lescot as the lead animator for the project and the entire team worked intensively at Brunch Studio Paris to bring this vibrant and animated poem to life.
